We believe that home learning embraces the Coleshill School’s ethos of SPIRIT by encouraging and facilitating Self-management, Perseverance, Innovation, Reflection, Independence and Team work. Consequently for home learning to be effective, students must take responsibility for ensuring they record home learning in their planner and devote a suitable amount of time for its successful completion. Parental support to reinforce the importance of home learning will also help students to be effective learners away from the classroom.
Aims of Home Learning:
- To provide opportunities for students to work independently and to take responsibility for their own learning
- To encourage students to develop a self-disciplined and self-motivating attitude to study
- To help students recognise the link between good study habits and higher standards of achievement
- To develop skills and encourage revision and consolidation of work covered in class
- To extend learning covered in class by use of meaningful learning activities and develop research skills
- To support parents/carers understanding of what their child(ren) are learning in school and develop home school links
Home Learning will be set by individual subject teachers. Home learning may be in the form of written work, research based tasks or learning and revision in preparation for in-class tests or external assessment.
Key Stage 3 – Years 7 and 8
Home learning in English, mathematics, science, geography, history and modern foreign languages will be set weekly. The duration of home learning will vary depending on the nature of the task. Homework for technology, citizenship/RE, ICT and expressive arts will not necessarily be set on a weekly basis due to the nature of timetabling in these subjects and may be in the form of project work to be completed over a number of weeks.
Key Stage 4 - Years 9, 10 and 11
Home learning in key stage 4 follows the same rationale as key stage 3 but will be set for the option subjects students have chosen. Students can expect to receive an amount of work commensurate with the higher level of study needed at GCSE level.
Key Stage 5 – Years 12 and 13
Students in Years 12 and 13 are expected to devote at least 5 hours per week outside lessons to each subject they are studying. Students will have study periods for each subject incorporated into their timetables when they will be expected to complete home learning tasks.
Students will be supported by the VI Form team and encouraged to make full use of the facilities available within the VI Form centre both during and after normal school hours.
Any issues concerning Home Learning should be addressed in the first instance to either the appropriate Head of Subject or the Head of House
In order to support students with the organisation of home learning and to enable parents to track their child’s home learning we are trialing the Penstripe App.
The App has many benefits: it allows teachers to set work online and to upload worksheets and links to web based learning, students are able to view their timetable and use the diary function to organize their home learning; parents are able to view their child’s learning and support in organising their studies. Every student and parent has been assigned a login and detailed instructions have been provided to support in the use of this new technology.
This system, is a valuable tool - enabling students, staff and parents to work together to maximise the effectiveness of home learning and we look forward to seeing our youngsters grow as independent leaners.
